CO2 in Angiography: Angiodroid at the Senate of the Republic

SHARE

On September 30, 2025, the Italian Senate of the Republic hosted the press conference “CO₂ in Angiography: Innovation and Safety Protecting Patients’ Health”, promoted by Senator Elena Murelli with the non-conditional contribution of Angiodroid.

A Unique Forum for Innovation and Patient Safety

The event brought together institutions, clinicians, researchers, and representatives of the industrial sector to explore the use of CO₂ as an alternative contrast agent to iodine- based media in angiographic procedures.
In an era where medicine is increasingly personalized and patient-centered, CO₂ stands out as a safe and clinically effective solution, capable of reducing risks for fragile patients or those with renal impairment, while contributing to the sustainability of the healthcare system by preventing complications and optimizing resources.

Clinical Excellence in Action

The conference was enriched by outstanding clinical insights and a live connection with the Vascular Surgery Department of Policlinico Sant'Orsola in Bologna, where the routine use of CO₂ is today a well-established reality and a benchmark for healthcare innovation.

The use of CO2 as a contrast agent has significantly changed the approach of vascular surgeons in treating arterial diseases through endovascular techniques. Until a few years ago, treating aortic pathologies required large amounts of iodine contrast, often with negative effects on kidney function. These renal impairments are closely linked to higher perioperative and one-year mortality rates. Today, thanks to CO2, we can perform procedures using minimal—or even zero—iodine contrast while maintaining high image quality.

Prof. Mauro Gargiulo, Director of the Vascular Surgery Unit at Policlinico Sant’Orsola, Bologna

The use of carbon dioxide as an alternative contrast medium to iodine represents an important opportunity for fragile patients requiring greater renal protection and a lower risk of adverse reactions. It is essential that all physicians and healthcare professionals become aware of these new diagnostic options to ensure greater appropriateness and safety in clinical practice.

Recognizing Key Contributions

A special thanks to all the speakers who contributed their expertise to this important discussion: Prof. G. Torsello, Dr. R. Iezzi, Prof. M. Gargiulo, Dr. M. Antonello, Prof. G. La Manna, and Prof. S. Michelagnoli.
Sincere recognition goes to Stefano De Lillo, Anna Lisa Mandorino, and Angela Deni, whose dedication and expertise enriched the discussion and fostered meaningful collaboration between institutions, clinicians, and the industrial sector.
A special acknowledgement to Senator Elena Murelli, for making this event possible and for her unwavering commitment to keeping attention on such a crucial topic for patient safety and the future of healthcare.

The use of CO2 in angiography not only ensures greater safety, but also represents an important step toward a more sustainable, modern, and people-centered healthcare system. It is our duty to promote the dissemination of clinical practices that protect health and improve the quality of care.

Sen. Elena Murelli, Member of the 10th Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Health, Public and Private Employment, Social Security

A Milestone in Our Mission

An event that marks a significant milestone in our mission: to innovate for safer, more inclusive, and sustainable medicine, serving both patients and the broader healthcare system.
